心理牙线（mental_floss）名称的由来，是取「Dental floss」（牙线）的谐音，为2001年创刊的双月刊杂志。该刊网页在「关于我们」做自我介绍时强调，该刊是给聪明人读的，但也不能太聪明，因看完之后还得想一下，才会知道好笑的地方在那里。该杂志另一项财源收入，是贩售印有搞笑讽刺标语的Ｔ恤。根据维基百科资料，该杂志发行量约八千份。

mental_floss magazine is an intelligent read, but not too intelligent. We're the sort of intelligent that you hang out with for a while, enjoy our company, laugh a little, smile a lot and then we part ways. Great times. Like a couple days later when you're impressing your friends with all these intriguing facts and things you picked up from us, and they ask you how you know so much, and you think back on that great afternoon you spent with us and you smile.
